Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy involves passing a flexible video instrument down the throat into the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestines.

Medications will be given during the procedure to anesthetize (numb) the back of your throat and decrease your saliva.  You will be given a sedative to make you drowsy prior to the procedure.

Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel using a camera  on a flexible tube.   It may provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of any abnormal growths.

Colonoscopy can remove polyps as small as one millimetre or less. Once polyps are removed, they can be studied with the aid of a microscope to determine if they are precancerous or not.
